<< Unit IV : The Republic & La Dolce Vita >>

Unit IV is concerned with two major facets of Roman identity. One is the formation of a unified Italian Republic, with Rome as its capital — an agonizing process that will see severe reductions in papal power, as well as the rise of Fascism with dire consequences for the Jewish populace.

The other facet is the so-called "Sweet Life" epitomized by Rome in popular media of the 1950s and beyond, not least in the films of Federico Fellini. The making of this particular brand, which resonates with tourists even today, is a compelling story of beauty, wonder, and (sometimes) willful ignorance.
