Unit I : Kings, Consuls & Emperors |
>> |
 |
Unit I of Mapping Rome focuses on ancient Rome, from its earliest foundations as a monarchy, to its middle period as a Republic, and its culmination as the seat of a global Empire. The unit takes its name from the respective rulers of these three incarnations.
The cityscape of Rome mirrors this vast historical sweep, either through building projects sanctioned by the Roman elite — Augustus’ claim that he found Rome a city of bricks and left it a city of marble is emblematic of such projects — or structures and sites that serve to bolster collective memory. Furthermore, Rome looms large in the works of poets and historians, who sometimes reinforce, sometimes contradict the prevailing narratives. |
